Spring Cleaning – One a Day Challenge

It’s that time of year again! Throw open the windows and let the dust blow all around the house and make you cough…. Alright, alright hopefully you haven’t let your home go THAT much over the winter. I found a great pin to help me get started in the Spring Cleaning spirit.

The best part about this list is that the cleaning starts(for the most part) in order from top to bottom. I’ve been a little behind on my spring cleaning because this winter just wont go away. For this reason I have been trying to do multiple projects at once.

Halfway through this list I realized that there were already some things that I’ve done recently(such as going through and reorganizing my closet). This gave me a great head start but also killed my drive. When I would look at the next day on the list and saw it crossed off I thought “Oh great! A day off from cleaning!” WRONG……

There were quite a few posts that I was able to combine. Washing all my bed linens and using baking soda to deodorize my mattress was a great combo. (I never thought my room had a smell to it but after I tried this my room smelled fantastic. It was a great natural odorless smell. There was nothing fancy trying to hide it).

To  be honest I am still working on completing the list. There have not been enough warm days to finish everything. While going through this I thought of some great tips to share for when you start your spring cleaning.

  • Don’t slack on any of these steps. You’ll regret it and wont feel complete.
  • When dusting fans, lights, shelves, etc make sure that you get into every corner. You wouldn’t believe the areas that dust and dead bugs can hide!
  • Apply the same thorough cleaning to when you are vacuuming. Use a hose attachment to clean in the corners of the rooms. It’s crazy how much dust accumulates where the edges of a carpet meets with a wall or baseboards. Also use this hose attachment to clean the crevices on your couches and chairs (It’s amazing how many crumbs are in there!)
  • When cleaning your kitchen make sure you not only vacuum, dust, and wash your pots and pans. Thoroughly scrub your floors. If you have a oven be sure you check out how to clean a glass stovetop or inside an oven. Don’t forget to mop under the kitchen table. Also consider using an Unger to get into those hard to clean places (such as under a fridge or stove)
  • Clean out your cabinets and drawers. If there is something you haven’t used in years (maybe an old wedding gift) consider parting ways with it to make room for something new. Maybe there is another better way to reorganize your cabinets. This is your chance!
  • Bathrooms: Clean the toilet. Not just with a toilet brush, but take a sponge to the entire thing! It’s amazing how many germs accumulate. (BE SURE TO DO THIS LAST WITH AN OLD SPONGE! Throw away sponge afterwards). Make sure you get into any tight places including next to the tub/shower and behind the toilet too. If you have shower doors, consider taking them off and scrubbing the areas you cannot normally get to. If you have a shower curtain take it down and soak it. Clean out the drains. It’s disgusting how much gunk accumulates in them.
  • Sweep out your garage, your porch or your deck.
  • If you have a pet, clean out their cage, bed, bowl or litter. If they have too many toys consider throwing them out. Check the expiration dates on their foods or treats. You don’t like expired or stale food so don’t make them eat it too.

Overall this was a helpful list. It brought to light many of the things that needed to be done and cleaned. Personally, I wasn’t feeling too accomplished with it. I know I dusted the ceilings and baseboards of every room, but the shams were still dirty and the windows weren’t washed. By the time I would get to another step I knew that part of that room was dirty again. I like going through each room and cleaning everything in that room as opposed to one step applied across my entire home. That way I know that even if I didn’t finish cleaning EVERYTHING that day I at least have one or two rooms I know are completely done. I also know that I didn’t skip a step in a certain room because I can check off everything in that room all at once.

Grade: Cost: Time:

B-

~$10 for various cleaning products

21 days or less

Level of Difficulty:
Medium
What I Would Change:
I would use this more as a basis for things to do, then break down your rooms into more specified lists. Some of the days seem very vague and it’s easy enough to miss some key parts that need cleaning.
Overall Impression:
Mediocre for me. I prefer to clean room by room as opposed to doing one form of cleaning across multiple rooms. Although there were some things I wouldn’t have thought to put on a list, I’ve personally made better and more detailed cleaning lists. If you need help getting organized this will be a great place to start.

UPDATE: I found another Pinterest pin for spring cleaning that is a lot more detailed and is organized room by room. I would highly suggest combining this pin with the one I tried for the most complete spring cleaning list. Combining the two together would be an “A” grade from me.
