How to Clean Hairbrushes and Combs

I’m pretty embarassed to admit that this is my hairbrush:

Disgusting, I know. I’ve tried to clean it before but the dust clumps get stuck on the ends of the bristles. I turned to Pinterest for help and found this how to guide for cleaning your hairbrush.

Method 1:

Use a comb to pick out all the excess hair from the brush. Once a majority of the hair is out, add shampoo and rinse under water. Use the comb to remove the excess hairs.

Results 1: It got most of the hair out, and some of the fuzz, but most of it was still stuck tight. I deem it a fail.

Method 2: Soak your hairbrush in a mixture of dish soap and baking soda (it doesn’t specify amounts, I added a good amount). I soaked mine is a plastic cup.

Results: I left it for 18 hours. About 2/3 (maybe 3/4) of the fuzz came off in the water. The rest was loosened up but still stuck on the bristles. I left the brush to airdry, then pulled off the excess fuzz (most of which moved towards the outer edge of the bristles). It was annoying to pick off, but a manageable amount. My hairbrush is nowhere close to being as good looking as it was when I bought it, but she does look much cleaner. I speculate that the mixture may have faded the brush color, but that may just be it’s “clean” look now.

Method 1: 10 Minutes

Method 2: 1 Minute Active, 18 Hours Soaking (You can soak for any alotted amount of time)

Level of Difficulty:
Easy
What I Would Change:
Maybe add more baking soda. Or…. I know it’s not hygenic, but I’m curious if the bubbles from a Soda/Pop would help fizz off the fuzz. Thoughts?
Overall Impression:
It looks a lot cleaner. I think there is still fuzz at the base where the bristles touch the brush. The soaking technique was much easier, but I enjoyed the shampoo technique too. I think my brush is just too old for these methods to have saved it much. Lesson Learned: Take better care of your hairbrush. Wash it at least once a week to keep it looking as healthy as your hair. And…. It’s time for me to go buy a new hairbrush.
