Last fall my family decided to reseal the driveway. It was a little too late in the season and didn’t dry properly so fine particles started to make their way into out house. All winter was a constant battle with cleaning the dust up. Unfortunately, our carpet wasn’t very lucky…. Our rug by the door was completely ruined (but easy to replace) however our family room carpet has a distinct wear pattern to it. Long story short, during the spring I was looking for ways to clean the carpet. I happened upon this pin.
I was lucky to have all the products already in my house, so this sounded really easy.
I decided to test this pin on our throw rug rather than out expensive rug. I’d rather deal with a wear pattern in our carpet than accidentally bleach it or something.
I started by dusting half of the rug with baking soda. I figured that doing half the rug would give me a great before and after view. Plus, we intend to throw it out anyway.
While that was sitting, I got together 1 tbsp of Vinegar and dish soap and mixed them together in a bowl with 2 cups hot water. By the time I finished mixing these and putting away some other things it was time to to vacuum up the baking soda.
Once that was done I used a sponge to apply the soapy/vinegar mixture. Some areas I only patted, while others I doused in the mix.
I didn’t see any instant results, nor did I see any dirt on the sponge or in the water. I decided to let it soak and check in later. There was no difference….. I’m not sure if it was because I was trying to get a tar like substance out of my carpet or if this just doesn’t work. I think for fresh stains this may be good. If you have pets that like to get into trouble or young kids it might help.

I think it depends on your stains. I would try this one a common dirt stain instead. | ||||||

Didn’t work for me. The carpet WAS really stained though and tar is a hard substance to get off anything. Still, I had high hopes for this one. Looks like we’ll just be calling a professional carpet cleaner. |
